Originally this plant comes from the Near East. The herb has a spicy, pungent, appetizing taste, which is mainly caused by glucosinolates (mustard oil glycosides) and bitter substances. The content of vitamin C and provitamin A as well as calcium, potassium and iron is also important.
The young leaves and stems are used for seasoning as well as in salads. Garnishing dishes with cress is also common.
